As we approach a new year, the Lord Mayor has called on Staffordshire Chambers members and local organisations to support the Armed Forces Covenant and help build a stronger, more supportive community for those who serve or have served in our Armed Forces.
The Lord Mayor’s open letter:
To everyone in our community,
As Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent and Armed Forces Champion, I’m proud to say that our city supports the Armed Forces Covenant. This is a national promise to make sure that people who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly.
The Covenant is more than just words. It’s about working together to:
· Support the Armed Forces community in our area
· Help people understand the challenges they face
· Honour the sacrifices they’ve made for our country
· Create chances for the Armed Forces and local people to connect
· Encourage Armed Forces members to take part in local events and projects
Stoke-on-Trent City Council signed the Covenant in 2012. In 2023, we were proud to receive the Gold Award from the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. This award shows that we support reservists, veterans, cadet instructors, and their families in our work and in our community.
Signing the Covenant is a great way for any organisation, big or small, public or private, to show they care about fairness, inclusion, and community responsibility. It shows that you value the Armed Forces and want to make sure they are supported.
I invite all organisations in Stoke-on-Trent and beyond to sign the Covenant. Together, we can build a kinder, more supportive community for those who have given so much.
Yours sincerely,
Cllr Steve Watkins
Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent
