New data from the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) highlights the ongoing challenges facing UK exporters.
The latest Trade Confidence Outlook shows that just 21% of exporters reported an increase in export orders in Q4 2025, down from 31% in Q2 2018. Meanwhile, 28% saw a fall in sales, and half reported no change.
Smaller businesses have been hit hardest. Only 19% of SMEs reported growth in export orders, compared with 39% of firms with more than 250 employees. Micro-exporters with fewer than 10 staff fared even worse, with just 17% seeing an increase in overseas orders.
Despite these challenges, Staffordshire firms have continued to trade overseas, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in a changing global market.
Allison Tomlinson, Head of International Trade at Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, said: “Staffordshire businesses have shown real resilience over the past few years, continuing to trade internationally despite challenges.
“Many of our members are already finding new opportunities overseas and a smoother trading relationship with the EU could unlock even more potential.
“With the right support and focus this year, exporting can feel less like a struggle and more like a path to growth for businesses of all sizes in our region.”
The BCC survey underlines the urgency for the EU reset to deliver practical improvements that help local exporters save time, reduce costs, and regain confidence. For Staffordshire businesses, even small changes in trade rules could make a significant difference in maintaining and expanding overseas markets.
