Expert advice and support for overseas success

With professional advisers in over 100 International Markets, Department for International Trade (DIT) is the Government Department that helps UK-based companies succeed in the global economy and assists overseas companies to bring their high-quality investment to the UK. 

This could be helping companies to export for the first time or assisting companies already exporting to develop new markets. The Staffordshire Team comprises seven International Trade Advisers who work with businesses of all sizes across all sectors. The level of support is always bespoke to each company but can include advice on any aspect of International Trade and investigate potential financial support to develop overseas.

DIT has staff based in Embassies across the world who can help companies gain a crucial foothold in their market. This can entail setting up a programme of meetings with potential customers in the Embassy itself, advising on best ‘route to market’, legislation, duties and generally helping to avoid any pitfalls.

Working closely with the DIT Team is the Chamber’s Export Documentation Team which provides a fast, efficient service and is always happy to advise companies on which documentation is required for any given country.  In 2015 the team processed Export Documentation with a value just short of £180m which is a testament to their skill and knowledge. Another facet of this team is that they can facilitate translations, at very competitive rates, on anything from a one page flyer to a full technical manual.

Translations 

We offer a fast and skillful translation service to promote your business abroad. Our translators cover more than 100 languages and we aim to cater for your particular industry sector. We can help with technical, commercial and legal documents, plus website and software translation. We also offer a bespoke translated leaflet service tailored to suit your individual needs.

Currently, one in five businesses believe it is losing custom overseas because it's not translating its website, or submitting it to the leading local search engines. Given that 75% of the world's population does not speak English, translation and local listings can make a big difference to traffic to your site and therefore to your business.

International Sales & Marketing

Overseas Market Visits and Trade Shows 

There's nothing like being there!  Many companies will cite taking part in overseas events such as trade shows and market visits as a really effective way to meet crucial contacts and customers face to face and update yourselves on the competition.

The International Trade Team organises an annual  programme of visits to overseas markets for companies who are looking to export for the first time as well as those who are established exporters.

Trade Fairs/Exhibitions (Worldwide)
Some Trade Fairs/Exhibitions are supported by DIT when the activity forms part of an agreed export strategy with an International Trade Adviser. Financial support for exhibitions may be available if you take at least 4sq m of stand space. Please contact the International Trade Team so that they can talk to you about financial packages and help and support that is available for you and your company.

Aid Funded Business Service

This includes Business Visits to the United Nations Agencies worldwide & The World Bank Group, Washington DC
These visits are aimed at companies looking to sell their products/services to the Relief Agencies worldwide. UKTI regularly take UK groups to visit to the United Nations Agencies in New York and Geneva and the World Bank in Washington DC. Companies from all over the United Kingdom are invited to participate.

International Market Access

Overseas Market Introduction Service (OMIS)

Market research is critical to the development of new markets in International trade. It can help companies reach sound business decisions on issues such as whether or not to export to a new market and how best to deliver products/services. A company conducting marketing research is less likely to make costly mistakes with their market entry strategy. The International Trade Team are able to provide help and guidance in researching overseas markets.

There are various levels of service available. These packages are built around the typical requirements of businesses making their first steps into a new overseas market, or looking to increase market penetration. All provide a flexible blend of preparatory advice and research, and support when you visit the market.

The OMIS service will put you directly in touch with the staff in our overseas offices, who will offer focused business advice and support on a whole range of topics key to making a successful foray into any given overseas market. Information can include; Route(s) to Market, Sales Channels, Demographics, Agents or Distributors, Pricing Strategy, Competition, Marketing Suggestions, Legislation and Local Business Practices.

Higher levels of OMIS Support can include; Product Launches, Escorted Meetings, Interpretation/ Translation and a full Programme Arranging Service. The latter effectively ensures that when a company travels to market they know who they will be meeting, why, where and when.

Each business and each market is unique. Our overseas experts will propose a programme of support and advice at the level you have chosen, aiming to support you with crucial market information, potential contacts and ultimately guide you to successful completion of a visit to the market.

The forum acts as a representative voice for exporting companies in the sub-region. Export Finance

The International Trade Team has excellent working relationships with all major UK Banks and works closely with other partners to provide a dedicated Letter of Credit Service.

The team runs regular events, securing sponsorship from major banks where obviously ‘getting paid’ and finance are at the forefront on all companies minds.

In addition Master-classes are held on Managing Export Risk and the team works closely with the Chamber of Commerce who can offer bespoke membership packages which include working with MoneyCorp for ForEx and Euler Hermes for Credit Insurance.
