Earlier this week, I was interviewed by BBC Radio Stoke, asking for comment on the news that President Trump was planning to impose tariffs on a number of European nations (including the United Kingdom), who didn’t agree with his proposals for the US to take ownership of Greenland.
At the time of writing this blog, the threat of tariffs has thankfully been withdrawn but it served as a timely reminder of the uncertainty that such an announcement can cause, triggering widespread concern amongst local businesses who export across the Atlantic. There are no winners in a trade war, with tariffs inevitably leading to a tit-for-tat response and a race to the bottom.
