Middle East trade alert: Implications for global shipping.

Ongoing security tensions in the Middle East are creating widespread disruptions for businesses relying on regional trade routes.

Air cargo has been particularly affected, with closures and restrictions across Middle Eastern airspace causing flights to be delayed, suspended or rerouted.

These disruptions are creating bottlenecks for time-sensitive shipments and affecting supply chains worldwide.

Shipping via the Red Sea and Suez Canal is also being impacted. Major carriers such as Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, and CMA CGM are diverting vessels around the longer route via the Cape of Good Hope, adding up to two weeks to transit times.

In addition, movements through the Strait of Hormuz are being heavily restricted, directly affecting key ports including Dubai’s Jebel Ali, one of the region’s busiest logistics hubs.

The situation is also driving up costs, as carriers are introducing war-risk surcharges and spot rates for freight increase in response to limited capacity.

Businesses should prepare for longer delivery times, explore alternative routes where possible, and secure transport capacity well in advance. Given the rapidly evolving situation, further changes to shipping and flight schedules may occur at short notice.
