Businesses urged to review UK steel import changes as new measures take effect.

Businesses importing steel into the UK are being urged to review the latest trade measures following the introduction of new rules affecting tariff-free quotas and import duties.

The changes reduce the volume of steel that can be brought into the UK without incurring tariffs, with imports above quota now subject to a 50% duty.

Quotas will operate on a first come, first served basis, meaning they may be exhausted quickly in higher demand categories.

A temporary exemption is available for qualifying imports made between 1 July and 30 September 2026, where goods are covered by a contract agreed before 14 March 2026. Eligible imports will not be subject to the 50% duty and will not count towards quota limits.

Businesses claiming the exemption must retain clear evidence, such as contracts, invoices or proof of payment, to demonstrate eligibility. HMRC may request supporting documentation after import, so records should be kept up to date.
