Meaning and definition
The term net zero means achieving a balance between the carbon emitted into the atmosphere, and the carbon removed from it. It is also important to note that net zero is different to absolute zero, in which zero greenhouse gas emissions would be produced, which is virtually impossible.
In order to achieve net zero, emissions from homes, transport, agriculture and industry will need to be cut. This campaign will support businesses within these sectors to reduce the amount of carbon they put into the atmosphere. There are so many ways that businesses and individuals can reduce carbon emissions, if everyone took a small and simple step we will be able to create a more green and sustainable world.
Why is this important?
Small businesses make up 99% of UK businesses and provide 60% of private sector jobs, which means that in order to achieve this target, government support for SMEs is vital.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have stated that by 2030 CO2 emissions need to be reduced by 45% and net zero needs to be achieved by 2050, in order to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
