Staffordshire’s largest professional services network celebrates landmark anniversary
The county’s largest professional services network, Finest, is celebrating its 20th birthday this year.
Finest is a unique members organisation facilitated by Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce for local professionals that promotes personal growth and best practices through a series of exclusive events and networking sessions.
Alex Ward-Brassington, Finest Chair and Marketing & PR Manager of Synectics Solutions, said: “It’s obvious to say that Finest has changed over the last 20 years, but the fundamentals have remained the same – bring local professionals together to network, grow and show off the best professionals in Staffordshire!
“For me, Finest has had a genuine effect on my personal development – my confidence has improved, my emotional resilience and my contacts of course.
“This has all grown due to the support and opportunities within this membership. I’d always encourage employers or employees to consider joining, to have a chance to flex skills you or your team may not get chance to day to day.”
If you’re in a professional services role within Staffordshire and your business is a member of the Chambers, the Finest network can help you to develop both professionally and personally.
The Finest Membership program offers a range of benefits, including:
- Exclusive networking opportunities with the county’s leading professionals
- Award-winning support with personal development, business opportunities and growth
- A voice of representation for local professionals
The Chamber will be celebrating the anniversary at the 2023 Spring Lunch.
“We are excited to recognize the contributions of our Finest members and look forward to many more years of success,” Chambers CEO, Sara Williams OBE added.
Businesses interested in becoming a Finest Member can contact the chamber for more information or visit www.staffordshirechambers.co.uk/finest-membership

- HR, Employment and Skills
- HS2
- Manufacturers’
- Money Matters
- Planning & Infrastructure
- Rural Business
- Social Value & Procurement
- Transport
Each forum is made up of representatives from our members and meet up several times during the year. Key topics for discussion are identified, guest speakers are brought in and our forums pick up the role of highlighting matters that concern our members, at both a national and regional level. Each forum has its own chair, who will steer both the meetings and objectives of that particular forum.
As we plan for 2023, forum chairs met to share ideas and thinking about how we best represent the views of our members. have discussed a number of key issues that are shared across many of the forums such as inflationary pressures, energy costs, skills shortages and staffing issues. In the year ahead, we’ve agreed to develop closer working across all of our policy forums and highlight the more common themes which impact on multiple business sectors. We will closely track any actions we take to escalate the concerns raised by our members and this could be done through consulting with our local authority partners, stakeholders and nationally, through the British Chambers’ of Commerce (BCC).
We welcome new faces in all of our policy forums but what’s in it for you and your business? It’s a chance for your views to be heard and the opportunity to work collaboratively with your fellow Chambers’ members in influencing our policy role on specific topics. You also get the chance to grow your networking contacts in similar sectors. It could also be a perfect development opportunity for one of your team, helping to empower confidence.
Some of our forum members have gone on to join British Chambers’ of Commerce (BCC) policy groupings, getting their voices heard at a national level.
Being a part of our policy forums is not a huge commitment with no more than four meetings a year and meetings typically start at 9am and last no more than an hour or so. New Year is a good chance to look at new learning and new opportunities and perhaps this could the perfect opportunity for you to get involved?
The last three calendar years have been incredibly challenging for our business community and this is likely to remain the case for 2023. Being the voice of business is what we do but why not get involved and play your part. Sara’s Blog: Something new locally and some disappointing national news for business
It was a very positive start to the year as this Wednesday saw the ‘ribbon cutting’ ceremony and launch of the long-awaited £43 million Etruria Valley Link Road (EVLR) and the official unveiling of the amazing Spitfire sculpture created by engineers and apprentices at Newcastle based KMF Group. The Spitfire sculpture pays tribute to its designer Reginald Mitchell, born only a few miles away in Butt Lane.
The 1km road connects the Wolstanton junction on the A500 with Festival Park and St Modwen Park Stoke Central and includes newly constructed bridges over the West Coast Mainline, Trent and Mersey Canal and Fowlea Brook.
The project should improve connectivity, reduce congestion and unlock access to land and infrastructure to support the creation of hundreds of jobs.
Funding for the link road has come from the city council (£11.5m), Department for Transport (£18.5m), the Local Enterprise Partnership (£8.2m) and the Growing Places Fund (£2.4m).
The opening of the EVLR is a key stage in the development of the Ceramic Valley Enterprise Zone and will help to create up to 9,000 new jobs and use 140 hectares of brownfield land.
The Ceramic Valley Enterprise Zone is made up of seven key sites along the A500 with the plan to increase investment in a range of employment sectors and reinforce this area as the world capital of ceramics from tableware to highly specialist technical ceramics applications. Some sites in this zone will benefit from a simplified planning system and business rate relief of up to £55,000 for five years.
At the event, Stoke-on-Trent City Council leader, Cllr Abi Brown introduced the Stoke-on-Trent Growth Company which will be established in the spring with the aim of bringing together all the current activity around inward investment, business support, employment and skills, culture and tourism and ensuring that these activities join up more effectively.
The company will offer more bespoke approach to investment and economic development based around distinctive needs and opportunities and the unique qualities and achievements that characterise our Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding area. It is excellent that Stoke-on-Trent is developing an identity of growth and change which chimes so well with the ambitions of the excellent businesses that are based here. Staffordshire Chambers is hugely supportive of this initiative and looks forward to working with all those involved and to ensure that this complements Staffordshire County Council’s “We Are Staffordshire” campaign.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council are keen to work with work with key stakeholders to develop an effective and collaborative operating model for the growth company, and a meeting of the Stoke-on-Trent City Forum on 7th March will involve businesses, public and voluntary sector partners and other key stakeholders in shaping plans for the venture.
To find out more about the Stoke-on-Trent Growth Company or to register for the event contact Caroline.Mairs@stoke.gov.uk from the investment, employment, skills and growth team.
Not such good news now as I am sure you will have seen how the announcement from Government on a new energy support package for businesses fell short of our hopes and expectations.
Despite Government efforts, an 85% drop in the financial envelope of support will fall short for thousands of UK businesses who are seriously struggling.
Many businesses have been fighting for their survival for months, and rising energy costs have fast become the tipping point. While Chambers welcome the 12-month duration of this package, its value is nowhere near far enough and means that for some firms, energy will now be a cost too far.
We understand Government must consider public finances, but any support package, short or long term, should be right for business – otherwise we’re going around in circles. The wrong type of support will continue to see business confidence deplete and Government having to revisit its package.
This is not about giving a handout to failing firms. It is about investing in British businesses, many of whom are confident about the strength of their order-books despite being hammered by eye-watering energy costs.
There are several options to consider, and we urge the Government to prioritise the following three:
- Increase OFGEM’s powers: Ensure effective competition in the business energy market for non-domestic contracts by extending OFGEM’s regulatory powers to guarantee businesses access competitive fixed rate contracts, and energy providers move swiftly to pass on wholesale price reductions.
- Energy production: Government to bring forward ambitious plans to enable more renewable and sustainable energy production across the UK.
- National energy saving campaign: Government should launch a national campaign with support initiatives for businesses to drive down current consumption through energy efficiency measures, such as green grants and tax incentives.
The British Chambers of Commerce will continue regular dialogue with Government on energy and I would urge you to get in touch via the contacts below with any issues you have around energy and your business.

Sara’s Blog: Happy New Year
It’s my pleasure to wish you all a Happy New Year and I hope you had the opportunity to recharge and get in shape for the challenges we all face together in 2023.
Businesses have faced seemingly insurmountable challenges in the past few years, but I am proud of how we in Staffordshire have stuck together, adapted and innovated, finding new ways to deal with changing social, financial and geo-political landscapes.
On the subject of innovation, hopefully you will by now have seen the new way we are communicating with members and all Staffordshire businesses via our brand-new daily news service, Daily Focus.
This joint venture between the Chambers and Stoke-based creative agency i-creation is now being delivered each weekday at 8.30am to thousands of inboxes.
We’ve built the biggest daily B2B audience in Staffordshire, which makes Daily Focus the only vehicle to reach businesses, every day, with news of the local and national economy, products, services, events and advice.
The local media landscape has changed so much and continues to change. That’s why we asked local businesses how they wanted to receive local business news. We also asked what was missing.
The message we got back many times over was a regular, focused, authoritative business news service was important to their business and to our county.
We used December as a ‘soft’ launch period, testing the water to gauge opinion and we were delighted with the response. Feedback has been excellent and in just a month our reader numbers are better than those of campaigns which have run for years.
For Daily Focus to fully succeed we need your input. Email your news stories and/or tips to news@daily-focus.co.uk . Tell us what issues affect you, what help are you looking for or what has been working well for your business.
Daily Focus is your news platform, and we look forward to your input in 2023.
I was humbled and, at the same time, enormously proud to receive this honour of an OBE in the King’s New Year Honours list last week.
I have been involved with the Chamber movement for almost 25 years – with the past 11 years spent at Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce.
I must admit I didn’t know a great deal about the area other than being a world centre for ceramic excellence, however I was made to feel welcome from day one. The time has flown by, and I have enjoyed every minute, learning so much about Staffordshire, making many friends and working with such amazing people who run and work in incredible businesses.
It is a source of constant joy and privilege to be able to support businesses and communities in Staffordshire and I want to thank my incredible team who help and inspire me every day.
We have such a close-knit community who genuinely support and look after each other and I thank you all for your support and being a part of something very special – the Staffordshire business family.
If you want to talk to us about any business issues, including funding, you can call the Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce switchboard on 01782 202222 or call the Stoke and Staffs Growth Hub Helpline on 0300 111 8002 or email: info@staffordshirechambers.co.uk

Sara’s Blog: Our year in review and looking to 2023
It’s hard to believe that 12 months have passed since Staffordshire Chambers was named Chamber of the Year by the British Chambers of Commerce – an accolade that recognised our relationship with the business community and acted as a catalyst for the year that followed.
In a year marred by international conflict and unprecedented rises in inflation, it fills me with great pride to know that the Chamber and our partners have supported the local business community with a comprehensive range of programmes and services.
During the last financial year, through our Positive Pathways programme, we have supported almost 100 refugees who have fled war, violence, conflict or persecution with employability skills and business start-up advice. Our Positive Pathways team have worked tirelessly to help refugees find employment in the local area, and it is tremendous news that this programme has been extended by a further 12 months. We have welcomed a number of refugees from Ukraine and the thoughts of everyone at the Chamber remain with the country at this difficult time.
Over 200 businesses have been launched with the support of our Start-up programme. The entrepreneurial spirit is very much alive and well in Staffordshire, and I would urge anyone who’s interested in stepping into the world of self-employment to get in touch, here.
Our newly-formed International Trade Centre processed export documentation worth almost £300 million throughout the last financial year – an impressive figure in its own right but something that we’re particularly proud of given the current climate that businesses are operating in. Breaking into new markets can really help evolve your business, and I would urge anyone considering oversees expansions in the new year to get in touch with our International Trade Centre manager, Allison Tomlinson.
Our Kickstart programme, overseen by our Head of Projects and Business Services, Tom Nadin, supported an incredible 912 young people into work across Staffordshire, and we were also proud to support over 2,500 business crime victims through our business crime advisor.
Shire Hall, a jewel in the heart of Stafford, was renovated during the summer and is the new home of Stafford Chamber, opening to the public this autumn. Our members are welcome to use the facilities at Shire Hall for free – an extension of the Members’ Lounge at Commerce House that has been hugely popular throughout the year as hybrid and remote working opportunities grow increasingly popular.
We were also selected by the Secretary of State for Education to lead the development and delivery of the Local Skills Improvement Plan for Stoke-On-Trent and Staffordshire. In November, we invited 70 business owners and leaders to our Skills Summit at the Catalyst Building, Staffordshire University, to discuss issues around recruiting and retaining staff. I look forward to continuing this work in the new year.
Most recently, we were proud to announce that a new daily news service would be making its way to inboxes across the county.
Daily Focus will be a source of the most up-to-date business news and comment from across Staffordshire – transforming the ways that local businesses receive and share information.
There is a real feeling of demand for a regular, focused and authoritative business news service to represent the businesses in our county. We want to shout about the brilliant things that Staffordshire businesses are getting up to – and encourage you to send your stories to the Daily Focus team on news@daily-focus.co.uk. You can sign up to the news service, here.
I am extremely excited about this project and look forward to welcoming your input!
We’re now seeing our events calendar for 2023 taking shape, with some very exciting events in the pipeline, including the return of our Chamber Awards and Let’s Do Business. We’ll be looking to continue the momentum from a record-breaking year, which included the most amount of entries for our Chamber awards and our best footfall on record for Let’s Do Business. There’s also an extremely exciting keynote speaker event planned for March – keep your eyes peeled on the Chambers’ events page for more details!
We of course couldn’t do it without the support of our membership. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.

Sara’s Blog: Sad times as Wade Ceramics enters administration
It was sad news to hear last weekend that Wade Ceramics has gone into administration.
In existence since 1867, Wade moved to its state-of-the-art factory on Festival Park in 2011.
As a Chamber we have incredibly strong ties with Wade as their MD, Paul Farmer OBE was our President from 2016 to 2019 followed by a three-year stint as Honorary Treasurer.
Not only have we lost another iconic local pottery company, but the decision will sadly result in the loss of around 140 jobs just three weeks before Christmas.
The decision is due to the challenges facing customers and the current economic challenges, including rising energy and supply costs.
Ceramics firms have been up against internationally uncompetitive energy and compliance costs for some time and the terrible and protracted war in Ukraine has led to unsustainably high gas prices. This puts even more pressure on firms unable to easily move away from reliance on gas to fuel the kilns.
Our ceramics businesses sit at the very heart of UK manufacturing. Without the brick, tile, and clay pipe manufacturers there would be no housebuilding. There is no glass or steel industry without the refractories and there is no heat from waste without advanced ceramics.
Energy costs are the number one business concern and must be a top priority for the Government.
A British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) survey in October found almost half of SMEs say they will find it difficult to pay their energy bills once the Government’s Energy Bill Relief Scheme ends on 31st March 2023 and some saying that they will not be able to pay their bills at all after 31st March.
While current Government support is welcome, there is a cliff-edge looming, and firms will struggle to see beyond it. They need certainty on what will happen in April so they can plan with increased confidence in a market where energy prices are certain to remain volatile.
There are other levers that Government can pull to relieve cost pressures, such as a reform of business rates to compensate firms that see energy support reduced or phased out.
With a lack of competitiveness in the business energy market firms are struggling to get quotes from different providers, and they are not guaranteed access to fixed-rate contracts.
Ofgem should be given more power to strengthen regulation of the energy market for businesses, ensuring suppliers offer fixed-rate contracts to business customers, and that competitiveness is increased.
One thing for certain is that the Chambers will remain dogged in the fight to protect all Staffordshire businesses and we will not let up on the pressure we exert on those in power from our own MPs to the Prime Minister. And we will continue to fight for renewable sources of power to be available – from district heat networks, heat to power plants, solar arrays and wind power. We know that businesses want to invest in these too and need help from planning and the National Grid upgrade to make it happen.
Staffordshire businesses have proved a spirit of togetherness through the pandemic and the current financial turbulence. There are so many people out there who offer their time and expertise for the good of us all and the Chambers is the place where they all come together, be that through our sector forums, area boards, events, seminars or through direct contact with our team.
As always, I would urge anyone with a question or a concern to get in touch via the channels below. Your voice is important to our continued representations to those in government who have the power to act for the good of business.
If you want to talk to us about any business issues, including funding, you can call our switchboard on 01782 202222 or call the Stoke and Staffs Growth Hub Helpline on 0300 111 8002 or email: info@staffordshirechambers.co.uk
