Understandably we are all a little cautious about close contact and Covid precautions need to remain in place for some time yet, but it genuinely felt as if the pandemic gloom and pessimism had lifted, and that Staffordshire was sending a clear message that we are open for business and new opportunities.

Policy Spotlight with Rhouda: How can the advancement of youth and adult skills support businesses?
Last week, the British Chambers of Commerce held a steering group with members across the chamber network focusing on issues regarding the development of adult and youth skills. The session highlighted the key areas in which decision makers need to focus on in order to support business productivity as well as to ensure UK economic progression continues.
Since the start of the pandemic, businesses have reported large-scale shortages of skilled workers which has resulted in a decrease in productivity and business confidence. With recent discussions taking place concerning economic progression, it is essential that businesses are supported in all ways possible to ensure that they have the right resources to maintain business operations as usual. Over the course of the pandemic, it has become increasingly more difficult for young people to get the training and preparation they need to be prepared for the world of work.
Ensuring that there is a clear and accessible link between places of education and businesses will support the development of youth skills and offer greater opportunities for work experience and internships. Additionally, investing in skills bootcamps, T-levels and on-the-job traineeships will provide high quality pathways to rewarding careers across a wide range of industries.
Sara Williams, CEO of Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce said: “Businesses in various sectors have really struggled during the pandemic, especially firms that remained closed due to lockdown restrictions. This has amplified financial difficulties, meaning that they will be less able to fund employee training. It is critical that the government addresses the shortage in technical skills and provides funding in order to support businesses with the resources that they need, to prevent further regression in business development.
“It was promising to hear in the Autumn Budget that the government has set aside £560m for adult numeracy skills training. Conversations around skills are often focused on younger generations, however by investing in the skills of adults across the nation, businesses are more likely to be able to fill vacancies at a faster rate with skilled workers. We hope to see the government put businesses at the centre of local skills planning, ensuring that people are trained for sustainable jobs.”
By having the right skills in literacy and numeracy employees will have the opportunity to progress in their chosen careers. This is crucial for businesses as they will find it a lot easier to retain staff and will spend less time and resources on recruiting new employees.
The Staffordshire Business Pledge for Literacy provides a framework for businesses to tackle the literacy challenges throughout the county by working with the Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce as well as the National Literacy Trust. This is a great initiative supporting the drive to raise literacy levels in the local community and engage employees in tackling the literacy challenge. You can sign the Pledge, here.
Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce hosts a quarterly Employability, HR and Skills forum giving members the opportunity to steer the Chambers representations on certain matters. To find out more or to join the forum get in touch by emailing rhouda.elalfy@staffordshirechambers.co.uk or call 01782 202222.
The government recently announced plans to strengthen day one employment rights and increase productivity of businesses. This will mean that British workers will have more choice over when and where they work, introducing more flexibility in the workplace. The British Chambers of Commerce are looking for feedback on how this proposal will affect employers. Join the conversation on the Virtual Members Lounge, here. Sara’s Blog: The net zero challenge, Let’s do Business, 2021 Awards finalists and QES
Timed to coincide with COP26, a new survey of UK and overseas businesses by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has revealed just how challenging net-zero targets will be to hit unless governments work with businesses across the globe on making transitions to reduce their carbon footprint.
The survey reveals what we all know – that translating the deals, headlines and rhetoric from Glasgow into practical, workable solutions is the real challenge.
It revealed that a startling nine out of 10 firms have not done any assessment on a series of key strategies for managing a sustainable transition to net zero and two thirds (61%) said either capital grants or tax allowances would do most to encourage them to reduce their carbon consumption in the long term.
It also found most businesses were either unaware of or were not taking steps to get involved in key net zero strategies. These included the impact of changes to food supply chains (93%), a ‘Just Transition’ to net zero (93%), or the use of ‘nature-based solutions’ (89%). It also gave an indication of which of the UK’s 10 key priorities for a green industrial revolution were most important to them.
It found that 39% recommend prioritising ‘protecting our natural environment’, while 34% favoured ‘greener buildings’, 33% ‘delivering new and advanced nuclear power’, 33% ‘advancing offshore wind’, and 32% ‘driving the growth of low carbon hydrogen’.
There is a real danger that smaller businesses will get left behind unless politicians and business leaders come together to galvanise action.
A good start for all businesses is the BCC Net Zero hub, in partnership with O2, which provides businesses with a one-stop shop on everything you need to know about setting Net Zero targets. Welcome to the Net Zero Hub (britishchambers.org.uk)
In addition, we are here to help Staffordshire firms starting on the journey to net zero, just call or email us at the contacts below.

Policy Spotlight: Increase in National Living Wage and what this means for business?
As the chancellor announced his Autumn Budget last week, many people welcomed the increase in National Living Wage. Workers over the age of 23 are set to have a rise to £9.50 an hour, meaning that full-time workers will be paid an extra £1,074 a year before tax.
The rise is set to help low-paid workers who have been severely impacted by the pandemic as well as encouraging more workers into certain sectors such as hospitality, where they often have to work long and unsociable hours. With the recent surge in vacancies especially in sectors such as retail and healthcare, this announcement has come at the right time rewarding workers who have struggled over the last 18 months.
Increasing the National Living Wage has given hope to workers across the country – but what does this mean for businesses?
Many businesses welcome and support minimum wage and understand that it is a move in the right direction to help solve the current labour shortage. In addition to this, many businesses have already had to increase current salaries which are advertised on job offers in order to attract more applicants.
However, with rising energy costs, higher raw material prices and high levels of debt due to the pandemic and recent tax increases many firms have struggled with their cash flow. The rise in National Living Wage is likely to further impact a firms’ finances, putting them under more pressure.
Sara Williams, CEO of Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce said: “As part of the Chambers’ pledge to the UN Global Compact we support the decision to increase the National Living Wage especially after we have seen the way in which low paid workers have struggled over the course of the pandemic. We strongly believe that equal and fair pay for employees encourages greater productivity and momentum, which is exactly what the economy needs right now.
“Despite this increase undoubtedly putting businesses under greater financial pressure, it was great to see the chancellor recognise sectors such as retail, leisure and hospitality for the struggles that they have faced over the last 18 months. Rishi Sunak’s announcement of a 50% discount on business rates for these sectors will offer some relief to firms as well as help them to further invest in their growth. This discount will also help make paying a higher minimum wage more feasible.”
Ultimately, an increase in National Living Wage will contribute to the rising costs that businesses are facing across the board. Firms have stated that consumers are likely to face an increase in the cost of goods which will consequently add to inflationary pressures.
It is vital that for the remainder of this Parliament companies are not faced with additional costs. It is now time for businesses to be supported in all ways possible as they rebuild their finances.

Sara’s Blog: Reaction to the Budget and smart meters
There is much to welcome in this Budget for the business community in Staffordshire – including the news that Stoke-on-Trent will get support for three projects which will bring to life the City Centre Masterplan.
The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak appears to have listened to Chambers’ long-standing calls for changes to the business rates system and this will be good news for many firms. This will provide much needed relief for businesses across the country, giving many firms renewed confidence to invest and grow. It is particularly good to see the hospitality sector getting some support in this area.
Additional investment in skills, infrastructure and better access to finance will be key drivers for our economic recovery and will provide longer-term benefits and opportunities for businesses across the country. It will be interesting to see how a Regional Angels network will benefit businesses here. And the news that digital and cloud investment will be able to gain from R&D Tax Credits is also good news.
However, businesses have been battered by 18 months of the pandemic and problems around supply chain costs and disruption, labour shortages, price rises, soaring energy bills and taxes and there may still be difficult months ahead. If firms face unexpected bumps in the road, the Chancellor must be prepared to take further action to enable the economy to fire on all cylinders again.
Growth forecasts of at least 6 percent for the next two years will offer new opportunities and you can be assured that the Chambers will be doing everything in our power to ensure that Staffordshire firms benefit from this growth.

As COP 26 starts – with a flurry of activity and noise – it is also a good opportunity to review some simple ways to start the journey to minimising our damage to the climate.
We are promoting that businesses (and your staff members homes) will benefit from installing a smart meter. It allows businesses to wave goodbye to estimated billing by securely and automatically sending meter readings to your energy supplier – which is going to be more and more important to us all in the future. Getting accurate bills will help manage cashflow and budgeting, giving certainly of paying for exactly what you are using.
As Glasgow hosts COP26 this year it’s a good reminder of everyone’s responsibility to become more conscious of their environmental impact. Regardless of whether your business has three employees, or three thousand, we all should be aware of how much energy we’re using, and a smart meter is a step in the right direction. From the moment your smart meter is installed, you’re helping create a smart energy system which could ultimately help reduce all our carbon emissions.
A smart meter is a positive step in taking control of business outgoings and if your firm has 10 employees or less your business could be eligible for a smart meter.
To find out more please email: info@staffordshirechamber.co.uk You can also contact your energy supplier or broker. It could be one of the best calls you make this week.

Couple find their calling with fish and chips business
Avid gamer Matthew Martin and his wife Corina are enjoying their new venture as joint owners of a mobile fish and chip business following many years of long unsociable hours in the hospitality trade.
The couple, who have a 13-year-old daughter and a four-year-old son decided to go for broke after their working conditions were changed, leaving them extra stress with childcare and less time together as a family.
“It was really all about lifestyle, and fitting around our family”, explains Martin.
“I had been working for a large blue-chip pub chain, but the hours were terrible, so I left and got a job in car sales. Following redundancy, I joined my wife in catering at MOD Stafford.
“Contractual changes led to some hard thought about the way we worked and prioritised family life.
“We decided to take a leap of faith, take redundancy and start our own business. We had talked about self-employment for a while and had an idea that a mobile fish and chip van would be a good business idea.
“We then contacted Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce where we linked up with start-up advisor, Aly Davidson. Aly was incredibly helpful in helping us with everything we needed to know about starting and running a business.
“The Chamber also helped us to source a loan to buy the van through BizBritain. We bought a second-hand van fitted out with brand new equipment in January 2021 and we were ready to go at the end of March.
“The first outing was really nerve-wracking, we did a couple of test runs in Stafford, but we had no complaints, and we now make regular weekly visits to Seighford, Ranton and Yarnfield as well as taking private bookings and function work at weekends. And we recently got our first five-star review on Trip Advisor.
“We have never worked harder but this is our choice, and we make all the decisions, and importantly it puts us in control and gives us what we always wanted – a positive work-life balance with plenty of time for the family.”
Asked about the business name, gaming fanatic Martin answered: “We tried a few names. I am a big fan of Call of Duty on my Xbox and as soon as I said ‘Cod of Duty’, Corina said it sounded so right, not only because of my gaming addiction but, because of our background in military catering.”
Aly Davidson said: “It’s great to see Martin and Corina doing so well. They both have an incredible work ethic and drive to make their business a success. I always say there is a business in all of us, and sometimes we just need a wee push to bring it to life.”

Policy Spotlight: Latest inflation figures and what this means for business?
Official figures published by the Office for National Statistics last week revealed that price increases dropped slightly during September as the economy reopened. However, September’s dip in inflation has been explained to be a temporary data distortion rather than illustrating the reality of the current economic situation. This is due to the lower rate being caused by the fact that dining out costs were significantly less this August compared to last August during the Eat out to Help out Scheme.
The Bank of England has warned that it would have to act over rising inflation, suggesting that the rate may rise soon. The Bank has said that UK inflation is set to exceed 4% which is 2% higher than the government target. With many UK sectors already struggling with increasing costs of raw materials, this news is concerning. Businesses within the manufacturing sector have explained that the rise in cost of metals and machinery is leaving them with no choice but to increase the costs of products to their consumers.
Suren Thiru, Head of Economics at the British Chambers of Commerce said: “A renewed inflationary surge is expected in the coming months with the increase in the energy price cap, partial reversal of the VAT reductions for hospitality and tourism and persistent supply chain disruption. This is likely to push inflation above 4% by the end of 2021.
“While inflation is uncomfortably high, the Bank of England must hold its nerve on interest rates. Raising rates at a time of escalating cost pressures and looming tax rises would severely undermine an already fragile recovery.”
Sara Williams, CEO of Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, said: “With the intensification of the energy crisis, inflation is likely to increase further which is expected to impact income growth and consumer spending. At a time when we should be trying to encourage businesses to invest in order to support UK economic growth, the rise in inflation will affect firms’ profit margins pushing them into financial strain.
“In the upcoming Autumn Budget, we hope to see the Chancellor reduce cost pressures that businesses are facing in order to avoid further damage to business cashflow.”
The latest price rises in petrol, oil and natural gas have caused more people to show concern about increases in the rate of inflation. The current price for fuel has been recorded at the highest price since September 2013. In addition to this, the energy price crisis has created fear amongst many businesses as this is likely to aggravate the severe supply chain predicament.
We now urge the government to help businesses keep costs down and remain competitive by preventing all policy measures that increase upfront business costs for the remainder of this Parliament.

Sara’s Blog: The Leadup to COP26 and new Chamber Charity Forum
It is time for us all to get on board and work collaboratively to achieve the target of net-zero. The world has seen major devastating impacts of climate change this year through wildfires and severe flooding, highlighting the urgent need for action to be taken.
Earlier this week new plans set out by the government to achieve net-zero were announced. The £620m investment in grants for electric vehicles and charging points, as well as homeowners being able to apply for up to £5,000 to install low carbon heat pumps, is a positive step in the UK’s journey to decarbonise.
However, it is still unclear about the support that will be available for businesses to move towards net zero in their operations and the design of new products and services. The government now needs to ensure that in the upcoming Autumn Budget obstacles to green investment are removed and, indeed, there are grants and direct advice available.
All businesses need to start by understanding their impact. Staffordshire Business and Environment Network (SBEN) has recently launched their Carbon Tracker tool which is free to all eligible Staffordshire organisations. The tool is used to measure and monitor carbon emissions as well as help businesses plan their route to net-zero. This is a good start for any business just starting on their journey to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. To find out more or to apply to use the Carbon Tracker tool visit: https://sben.co.uk/funded-support/sben-carbon-tracker/.
At the COP26 conference in Glasgow from 31 October – 12 November, the focus will be on what UK businesses are doing towards achieving decarbonisation.
British Chambers of Commerce will be attending COP26 in Glasgow and will be presenting a full agenda of business-focused policy debates as well as providing the opportunity for exceptional networking opportunities as members showcase their climate leadership. This truly is a unique opportunity for businesses in our local area to join other chamber members in Glasgow to discuss challenges of the future.
To find out more information about COP26 and what it hopes to achieve visit: https://www.britishchambers.org.uk/news/2021/10/what-is-cop26-and-what-does-it-hope-to-achieve or book your place for the BCC COP26 events at City of Glasgow College here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cop26-registration-170444165086.
At Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, we have recently made some changes to our member forums. Chaired by Ben Martindale from Synectics Solutions, our first Charity Forum meeting took place earlier this month, covering a range of topics from staff shortages and difficulties in recruitment to funding and support needs.
The next charity forum will be held in January 2022 with discussions surrounding volunteering and skill sharing taking place. If you are interested in joining the conversation in this forum, get in touch with Staffordshire Chambers by calling 01782 202222 or email rhouda.elalfy@staffordshirechambers.co.uk.

Virtual office is a class act for education tech specialists
Education technology and remote learning specialists, Go Live Services has become the first business to sign up to a brand-new suite of virtual services offered by Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce.
Virtual Office Services does away with the need for a physical office through a range of services such as a virtual receptionist, physical mailbox, virtual inbox, document scanning, video conferencing and use of the Chambers Members’ Lounge for workspace and meetings in a Covid secure environment.
The pandemic has turned working practices on their head with many employees now facing a future working some, or all the time from home and firms adapting to hybrid working, with a blend of home working and time in at the office.
Whilst businesses are adapting their strategies, diversifying their product offering and changing their working processes, the need for excellent customer service remains constant, and maintaining high levels of consistency is a necessity.
Joe Basketts, managing director of Go Live Services said: “I started the business in 2018, offering remote working solutions to schools. Lockdown in 2020 saw business go through the roof and we had increased the team to five people. I live in Stone, but the others are in Wiltshire, Buckinghamshire, Merseyside, and Kirklees. We had a rented office in Keele which we only used six times in 12 months, making it an expensive folly.
“I started to look at alternatives with the big players in the serviced office sector, then by chance I read about the launch of Virtual Office Services in a Chamber email. As soon as I met the Chambers team and saw the facilities, I knew it was right for the business.
“It had a real community feel as opposed to the very ‘corporate’ alternatives. It was also incredible value for money, and it fits well with the company ethos of supporting sustainable practices, right down to the fact there are EV chargers next to the building.
“The Chambers Business Lounge is an amazing workspace and we have already all met there, and my colleagues were equally impressed. Every aspect of the package is professional and portrays the image we want to put across to our clients.
Staffordshire Chambers CEO, Sara Williams said: “I am delighted to welcome Go Live Services as our first Virtual Office Services user. We launched the service in response to our members’ demands and to help maintain the service levels and professionalism customers expect. The pandemic has left many businesses reassessing the need for a physical office whilst needing reception services and somewhere for meetings and workspace. I am confident that we supply that solution in Virtual Office Services.”
Basketts added: “I can’t believe the value our business gets through Chamber membership and Virtual Office Services. We have made real cost savings through utilising numerous services including Chamber HR, which we previously paid for but is now part of our membership. I would happily recommend Chamber membership and Virtual Office Services to any business looking to cut overheads without compromising their service.”
Any business interested in finding out more about Virtual Office Services can contact Vicky Frost – vicky.frost@staffordshirechambers.co.uk
